Rauhaa.

Message : Ostin taannoin Dark albumin remasteroituna versiona. Pitkänlinjan diggarina biisit entuudestaan kyllä tunsin, mutta kokonaisuus on ihastuttanut ja hämmästyttänyt. Vahvan levyn bändi teki 1977, deep poppia makeimmillaan. Remaster kyllä kuullostaa hyvältä, Måssen ja Ronnien soitto on ensimmäiseksi hunajaa korville, sitten alkaa havaita Jimin ja Rekun panoksen briljanttiudenkin. Pop-Liisaa katsoneena ja tätä kuunnellessa on huomaavinaan Ronnien päivittäneen symbaalejaan 1976-77 paikkeilla china-tyylisellä "kahahdus-pellillä"...

Message : EsaJii is looking for page 164:
Jukka had acquired a Fender Rhodes piano and proposed that Jim would play it at gigs, Jim was playing it on stage in the winter of 1972.

Message : I suppose if Jim did not play the piano on some tracks, the person playing it would have been Jukka Gustavson who has a pretty distinctive style. So if it is a Pembroke song and the piano playing is rudimantary my guess would be that he himself is playing.

The exception would the the very first Wigwam single, since JG had not joined yet. It seems that JP at the time was playing piano live, or at least he was soon after. So he probably played in the studio too, particular since the record was not produced by Donner and there as no indications of him even being around the studio at the time.

But we're still only guessing.

Message : I did not find the item I mentioned.

On page 133, Jim is composing Tombstone Valentine. Excited with his newly-acquired piano skills, he tried to use as many chords as possible to compose it.

p.107 Jim is at Hard ‘n Horny sessions composing on the piano. Otto provided Jim help with chords ever since Blues Section, where Jim was still demonstrating the chords in the studio with a guitar, presumably acoustic. Nikke mentions that “Jim never told him the chords, he just started to play” and Nikke had to follow along. They were playing the backing and Nikke did not know the names of songs or where the vocals, to be taped later, would be. Nikke had to follow the band in the studio, whereas on gigs he had a manger role.

So most likely on Hard ‘n Horny Jim played some piano.

On p.81, after the first single, Jim is still learning piano. In the following pages Jukka joins the band, so we find out very little about Jim and the piano.

p.154 Jim is at home, playing piano, but frustrated at his minor role in the band [as a musician?]. On p.156 with Lost Without a Trace, Jim had planned to do the basic track alone on piano, but Tolonen showed up on acoustic guitar. I guess there was no need to rework it with the band.

So, somehow mysteriously somewhere between Hard ‘n Horny and Fairyport, Jim’s piano skills come in, as well as on Wicked Ivory.

Message : There are obvious signs back in the Blues Section repertoire that Pembroke was composing on piano. He says something about this in my 1983 interview, but once again I'm stupid and I can't find it on this site!

I think it's pretty safe to assume he plays piano on all his own compositions recorded by Wigwam. A comment from Mikko would be nice.

Regarding Österberg it is a fact that jazz drummers often play the vibes, marimba etc. Perhaps he had such training. It goes back to the classical tradition, where these instruments are classified as percussion, though in some ways they are equally connected to the keyboard.

Message : By the time I first managed to see Wigwam live in '70 at Ruisrock, Jim was playing piano on stage. I am sure he composed on the piano and taught the new song to the band. Yet, I find no sure record of him playing on a record till Wicked Ivory 1972. He is not listed on the alnum credits before that as being on piano.

For America has piano and organ, but Jukka played both, as far as I know.

Message : It is almost certain that Ronnie played all the marimba parts on all the Wigwam records. he may appear as backing vocals on a few Wigwam tracks. I have the LP where he sings Hei vaan, so he could carry a tune.

Donner appears on piano in one Love track with Pepe Wilberg, so who knows. Only Walli is listed as producer.

I estimate the release of Must Be the Devil to be before May of 69, as I left Finland then with a copy. Hard 'n Horny came out Nov 69 and by then Jim was playing piano on recordings.

Message : EsaJii, glad you liked the analysis. Yes, it would be nice to know exactly who is playing (and singing). I never thought that perhaps Donner is participating, but why not. Probably Mats would remember better than anyone. To my experience bass players generally recall what went on, perhaps because they only have four strings to worry about! Still, he does a lot of the work on these two sides.

Message : Thanks Tanskalainen, for the Greasy review. I think some research may reveal if other musicians were present. You correctly see the connection to Hot Thumbs, but we do not know for sure whree Jim's piano debut on record is. Maybe not here.

The song has somehow become nostalgic for me. The sticky business reminds me of cotton candy. As Jim arrived in Finland on May Day, I then started connecting the song to my childhood and Linnanmäki, the amusement park that opens on May Day.

The lyrics never meant much to me, but I enjoyed it as a whole. Quite a record for four guys, I think Donner had some hand in it. And the A side as well.

Vanhana Wigu-fanina (jo vuodesta -70 tai jotain) olisin todella kiinnostunut olisiko jollakulla tietoa onko niistä nauhoista, jotka tehtiin "Live Music from the Twilight Zone" äänitettäessä mahdollista tehdä lisää materiaalia?
